Samah Gad, a DAC PhD student in computer science designed and organized an introductory data mining session for the annual Women in Computing Day (WCD) that was held on Friday, April 20th 2012. The WCD is an outreach event organized by the Association for Women in Computing (AWC) at Virginia Tech. Middle school girls are invited to the Computer Science department to show them how powerful yet fun computer science is. This year (2012), a session on data mining was introduced for the first time. Girls learned about the area of data mining, what it means, and how it could be used in everyday life - through an informative game and a simplified presentation. Two other DAC computer science students (Marjan Momtazpour and Lauren Bradel) as well as a computer science PhD student (Noha ElSherbiny) volunteered in organizing the session.
